The citizens of Colorado Springs voted in 1924 for a city owned utility providing our water, sewage, electrical and natural gas. We have done extensive review and restructuring of how the Utility Board operates and researched alternative governance models. Our current Colorado Springs Utilities is a well run, responsive and capable organization and the Utility Board is committed to ensure the best product and service is delivered to the customers, rate payers and citizens of Colorado Springs. Maintaining local control of our utilities rather than transferring oversight to a state board should be paramount.
There is also the desire by some to split the oversight of the Utilities from the Council and establish a separate Utilities Board. After extensive review over the past two years I believe that it is time to split the Utility Board responsibilities from City Council in order to better focus each function with well qualified people. I firmly believe that an independent board of directors for the utilities should be elected by you the citizens and rate payers within the service area.
I do have the academic background in business administration and public utilities and I have a strong interest in this area.
The utilities currently enjoys rates in the lower 1/3 of the country. These average lower rates is further attracting companies to the Colorado Springs area which is adding to our economic base. Our utilities is actively involved in economic development and working with companies to expand their current operations and attract new companies to the area.
The utilities currently provides one of the highest reliability rates in the country.
Cost effective services, low rates, high reliability and meeting all required federal and state environmental standards.
